Jobs Jobs Jobs, Everyone Needs Something to Do

It's true. Everyone does need something to do. But that's not why jobs are the political sacred cow they are. It has more to do with the fact that so many are living so close to the bone these days. But it's also about self-interest. Intense self-interest in keeping from sliding further into the hole, in climbing out of the hole, and in getting ever farther away from that hole.

That's why cats lay in the sun. It's their job. It's what they do. It serves their self interest. They get something for nothing.

Is that an idle muse or what?

I recently heard a news blurb reporting that unemployment climbed a bit in Europe (I trust all the European cats are still gainfully employed laying in the sun). They blamed the loss of jobs on high oil prices. The world economy is deeply entrenched in oil hungry occupations, however it seems the decline of oil should create jobs, not reduce them. Work preformed by oil can be replaced by jobs for many, many people. After all, the available mechanical work of every gallon of gas is about 8 kWh (assuming a 23% conversion efficiency from the thermal energy). Thus, the work of one gallon of gas can be replaced by a laborious 8-hour work day of ten people, if you assume a grueling, constant 100W output for each person. If you paid those ten people minimum wage, you find that the cost of a human gallon of gas is at least $400. When we get fed up toiling away all day for less than a kWh of productivity, we'll realize that solar energy is a much better way to get things done and we'll be free to go nap in the sun with the cats all day.

Well, you've got a point there. Doesn't sound like much fun though. I'd probably just do without whatever I would have used that gallon of gas for rather than work a job like that! But that's just me.

Now that I think of it, my cats never have had much use for gas to begin with. I think you've hit upon the reason. Good work!

Regarding everybody else, I dunno, I guess just lots more energy conversation is all we can hope for, as long as those (fair and) balanced energy people don't do all the talking.
