This project involved design, fabrication, installation, and operation of a solar, meteorological, and substation electrical performance monitoring system consisting of two subsystems linked by radio modems. The two photos below show the solar and meteorological station. Data from this station was collected along with substation electrical data such as transformer and feeder loads, transformer oil temperatures, voltages, and other parameters. These data were used in an landmark analysis performed by PG&E demonstrating the value of distributed power generation in a utility transmission and distribution network using photovoltaics. These analyses led to the construction of a nearby 500 KW photovoltaic power generation plant which alleviated the load on the Kerman substation and brought many associated benefits.
